Social Anxiety Disorder, or Social Phobia is a common condition characterized by intense anxiety associated with a variety of social situations (e.g., public speaking, initiating or maintaining conversations with others, and dating situations). Social phobia involves a fear of a negative evaluation by others, whether family, friends, acquaintances, or strangers. This fear typically causes inhibition within and/or avoidance of these situations.
Fortunately, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for social phobia. This form of therapy targets negative thoughts or beliefs that are usually highly distorted and trigger the anxiety. In addition, CBT involves a gradual exposure to feared situations, taken at one's own pace so that inhibition and avoidance are reduced. This may lead to improved functioning at work, school, social relationships, and social activities.
CBT is especially effective when delivered in a group format, where participants receive additional support and feedback and don’t feel so alone with their issues and fears. Learning skills to better manage the symptoms of Social Anxiety and Social Phobia can reduce suffering and bring much needed relief from this often debilitating disorder.
